The Hixon at Westside Yard project contains several unique design elements that work together to move this exciting project into a class of its own.
In our third post on the project we focus on the use of wall graphics to highlight a theme or bring dramatic effects to a design element of a project.
The design team at the Hixon wanted to highlight the history of this site and the city of Bend with reproductions of period scenes from the heyday of the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company. The historic Shevlin-Hixon lumber mill was located on the west side of the Deschutes River in the Old Mill District and their ‘Westside Yard” railroad yard and log storage was on the actual site of the Hixon apartments and Westside Yard complex.
For this project MC Smith coordinated with the Hixon project team and the Deschutes County Historical Society to identify and access five historical black and white photos that were then digitally enhanced and expanded to accommodate large format printing. The finished project was produced on our Roland 540 wide format printer utilizing their new TR2 TruVis inks and printed on Photo Tex EX wall graphic media.
Each of the five residence floors of the Hixon feature a different print in the elevator lobby. The prints were enlarged to fill the 8 foot high by 20 foot wide wall adjacent to the elevators. The result creates a dramatic effect upon entry to each floor.
Floor 6 features Mt Bachelor. Floor 5 is a print from the namesake Westside Yard rail log storage. Floor 4 is a Cat tractor and Big Wheel gathering logs. Floor 3 is the Central Oregon Irrigation District North dam and finally floor 2 is Downtown Bend in the winter.
Walls don’t have to be just walls, they can be your palette, your message, your logo or your billboard. Just let your imagination go!
